The (Un)reliable World of Medical Oxygen

In modern healthcare, medical oxygen is often taken for granted. Behind that reliability, however, sits a complex network of production, supply infrastructure, backup systems and strict standards designed to ensure oxygen is available whenever it is needed.

But that level of reliability is far from universal. A 2025 report by the Lancet Global Health Commission estimates that more than five billion people lack reliable access to medical oxygen.

That challenge is being tackled on several fronts – on-site oxygen generation is giving hospitals greater control over their own supply and reducing their reliance on deliveries, while humanitarian and public health organisations are working to bring reliable oxygen infrastructure to hospitals and healthcare facilities that have historically lacked it altogether.

At the same time, healthcare is becoming increasingly dependent on oxygen. As demand grows, so does the need to ensure that supply systems are not only available, but reliable, resilient and capable of supporting modern patient care.
