But that level of reliability is far from universal. A 2025 report by the Lancet Global Health Commission estimates that more than five billion people lack reliable access to medical oxygen.
That challenge is being tackled on several fronts – on-site oxygen generation is giving hospitals greater control over their own supply and reducing their reliance on deliveries, while humanitarian and public health organisations are working to bring reliable oxygen infrastructure to hospitals and healthcare facilities that have historically lacked it altogether.
